The Healthy Schools Program

The Alliance for a Healthier Generation launched its Healthy Schools Program in February of 2006 with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The Program provides support to individuals at thousands of schools in all 50 states as they work to create healthy school environments that promote physical activity and healthy eating for students and staff. Support to schools is based on a set of criteria in the areas of nutrition, physical activity and school employee wellness.

School Spotlight

Healthy Schools Program schools make small changes that have a big impact
At Delong Middle School in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, students surveyed their classmates’ food preferences, and worked with the School Wellness Council and food service staff to make changes to menus that were both nutritious and delicious. Students and teachers also launched the “JAMmin Minute” program, which adds a minute of physical activity to the beginning of each class period. Students are also visiting classrooms to hold “taste-testing” and healthy food cooking demonstrations that encourage healthy snack choices.
