Berkeley County School District - Berkeley County, West Virginia
A community-based collaborative in West Virginia is working to bring health education to students in the region. They are providing nutrition and fitness activities and presenters to a Berkeley County Schools afterschool program held at the Boys and Girls Club. They provide materials and resources to pre-K programs in the district, assist middle school afterschool programs and organize family fun and fitness events at the elementary schools. They are also involved in an annual intervention for mothers and adolescent daughters called “BodyWorks.” This program was developed by the Office on Women’s Health and is a ten-week program with a train the trainer component.
The collaborative, West Virginia Kids in Action (WVKIA), was formed in 2006 to prevent and treat pediatric obesity in the Eastern Panhandle by promoting healthier lifestyles for families. WVKIA’s priorities include developing both medical and behavioral interventions, educating the community and establishing a resource network for volunteers, referrals and general project assistance. Individuals from Shenandoah Community Health, WVU Hospital-East, Harpers Ferry Family Medicine, WVU Extension Service, Healthier Berkeley County, Healthier Jefferson County and the Health and Human Services Collaborative responded to accelerating obesity rates with the creation of WVKIA.
In January 2007, following the awarding of a Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation grant, the founders/steering committee hired director Robin Truax. Truax has taught health in the Eastern Panhandle for over twenty years and was honored as Berkeley County Teacher of the Year in 2005-2006. When the grant funding ended, Berkeley County Schools and Shenandoah Community Health Center entered into a memorandum of understanding and continue to share the salary and associated expenses.
