West New York, New Jersey

Since the beginning of the school year, the administration and school wellness council at Public School No. 1 have worked together to create more opportunities for physical activity and healthy eating at school. A popular fitness club for students meets three mornings a week, followed by a healthy breakfast before school starts. The school schedule was adjusted, so lunch includes time for organized physical activity.

The entire school community is taking advantage of participation in school-wide events that promote wellness. Last year, these events included the daylong Hoops for Heart fundraiser that raised thousands of dollars for the American Heart Association (AHA). Public School No. 1 also partnered with the district to support AHA’s Go Red For Women Campaign to encourage women to take charge of their heart health.

The administration encourages teachers in their efforts to incorporate wellness concepts into their classroom lesson plans. While some teachers initially expressed resistance to taking on this new content, they have now embraced the concept of a healthier school community.

West New York Public School No. 1 received the bronze National Recognition Award in 2009.

As a recipient of the  Healthy Schools Program National Recognition Award, this school reached an important benchmark in improving the learning and working environments of students and staff. By making significant changes in the areas of healthy eating, physical activity and staff wellness, this school has joined a growing movement of committed individuals and organizations that are working to combat childhood obesity and foster healthier communities.
