Students Motivated by Creative, Not Edible Rewards

Students Motivated by Creative, Not Edible Rewards VANSVILLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL | PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MARYLAND

Students at Vansville Elementary in Prince George’s County, Maryland have discovered that non-food rewards can be very motivating- what kid wouldn’t love the chance to dunk their teacher? To motivate students to help raise funds for the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program, classes that raised over $100 were able to dunk their teacher in a tank during a field day. Other top fundraising students earned one free homework pass.

Individual students who raised the most money were able to serve as principal, assistant principal or physical education teacher for a day. As a culminating event, since the school surpassed last year’s donation amount, a teacher volunteered to have the top fundraising class cut off her ponytail to donate to a non-profit to turn into wigs for children with cancer. This school has found success in showing students that sometimes helping others can be the best reward!
