McGregor Elementary School Wins National Healthy Schools Silver Award
A typical day at McGregor Elementary School is packed with opportunities for physical activity from the moment students arrive on campus. In the morning, students warm up for class with twenty minutes of physical activity. Teachers incorporate movement breaks into their lesson plans to ensure that students remain energized and focused, and the school offers extra sessions of physical education. Staff participate in fitness challenges and walk during lunch or after school. Healthy change is also taking place in the cafeteria, where students are encouraged to eat nutritious meals and discuss healthy choices. Every Tuesday, students enjoy the opportunity to taste new fruits, vegetables, and other healthy treats. All foods and beverages sold outside of the school meals program align with the USDA Smart Snacks in School standards. “Our new school environment has made an impact on the students and staff, and has made everyone more health-conscious,” said Melissa Warner, wellness coordinator.
