Maxine Smith STEAM Academy Wins National Healthy Schools Silver Award
At Maxine Smith STEAM Academy, healthy eating and physical activity go hand-in-hand. Many students begin their morning by walking or biking to school and wrap up the school day by participating in an afterschool fitness program. The school shares various physical activity opportunities with staff by posting on a wellness board and sending wellness newsletters via email. To encourage healthy eating habits, the school offers a full menu of healthy breakfast and lunch options that align with federal nutrition standards. Breakfast is served in class every day to ensure that students fuel up before a full day of learning, and the food service staff provide fruits and vegetables as an afterschool snack. With the addition of a school garden, students and staff alike are enjoying fresh, homegrown vegetables and developing an appreciation for the process of growing healthy food. “The Healthy Schools Program serves as a guideline that helps us know where we stand in the process of creating and maintaining a healthy school environment,” said Kyle Kuusisto, physical education teacher.
