Wallace Middle School Wins National Healthy Schools Silver Award

The administration, students and staff at Wallace Middle School understand the importance of developing healthy habits. In the cafeteria, students enjoy access to an upgraded salad bar and a healthy menu created with the help of a nutrition specialist. The school increased announcements and marketing of healthy options during lunch and aligned all of its food offerings with the USDA’s Smart Snacks in School standards. Opportunities for physical activity have increased with the addition of after-school walking groups, movement breaks during class, and improved physical education lessons. To promote staff wellness, the school has increased the number of fitness groups available to employees and hosts monthly visits from a nutritionist. These changes have shaped healthier and more positive environment at Wallace. “This has become our school culture,” said Deborah Wills, health coordinator. She added, “All organizations, families and staff know our expectations. We are better utilizing our student wellness council and are bringing great ideas to the table.”
