Out-of-School Time in Philly

"If I wasn't at the Boys & Girls Club…I think I'd just be bored and lonely sitting at the house."

— Quadair, 17 year-old

More than 15 percent of American youth are involved in afterschool programs and millions more engaged in summer camps, community centers and faith-based organizations. Out-of-school time programs like Wissahickon Boys & Girls Club of Philadelphia are leading the way to make these places some of the healthiest environments for kids to spend their time.

A Collaboration to Celebrate

Our work with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America is striving to reach as many programs as possible as well as make it as easy as possible for those programs to support the health of the youth for which they care.

Fighting Boredom

Engaging young people in out-of-school time is a multifaceted process. You have to provide youth activities that keep them moving and interested in the program when they are there, as well as create an environment that young people want to come back to again and again.

Devastated but not Defeated

Quadair is a 17-year-old at the Wissahickon Club. His doctor told him he would have to stop playing basketball due to a heart problem, he was devastated, but not defeated. Quadair says the Club motivated him to eat right, gave him exercise tips, and educated him about foods that “look like they’re good for you but are not.” Now, Quadair has lost weight and is back to playing the sport he loves.

"One of the exciting things about working with the Alliance is that it gives us different resources as Boys & Girls Club professionals."

— Libby Lescalleet, Executive Program Officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia
