The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a catalyst for children’s health. We work with schools, companies, community organizations, healthcare professionals and families to transform the conditions and systems that lead to healthier kids.
Our goal is to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity and to empower kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits. Founded by the American Heart Association and Clinton Foundation, we are collaborative change-makers working to create a nation where children thrive. We collaborate with and empower people and leaders to transform the environments that can make a difference in a child’s health: homes, schools, doctor’s offices and communities.
We believe that...
If we can empower the people who influence these environments by giving them easy access to the best resources and science-based best practices, we can create a movement that transforms the places kids spend their time into healthy environments that encourage sustainable lifestyles.
Change comes when individuals, groups, and systems work together to create healthy environments for kids.
We think schools, the place where kids spend the majority of their time outside the home, is a good place to start. Our evidence-based, Healthy Schools Program is currently building healthier school environments for more than 19 million students in more than 31,000 schools in every state and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. And it’s not just the number of schools in our program that we are concerned with but the quality of efforts being made that make the difference.

In Out-of-School Time Settings
We work with out-of-school time providers around the country to create healthy environments where youth can eat better and move more. Our Healthy Out-of-School Time Framework combines Alliance best practices with healthy eating and physical activity standards to create a guide for communities nationwide to transform the areas where kids spend their time before school, after school, and during school breaks.
We believe engaging with companies of diverse industries can systemically improve access to healthier foods and beverages as well as physical activity for kids and their families. As a result of this effort, we have facilitated successful voluntary agreements with the beverage, snack food, dairy, fitness and healthcare industries. Our beverage agreement, for example, resulted in a significant reduction in the calories shipped to students in schools across the country.
Though we welcome everyone to the table, we won’t accept funds from entities in which we are negotiating solutions.
At the Doctor
By giving doctors, insurers, and employers a strong incentive to stop weight gain before it causes serious health problems, we believe we can enlist some of our nation’s leading forces in health to create a system of prevention rather than treatment. We are currently creating a solution with these healthcare providers in a landmark agreement to reimburse physicians and registered dietitians for obesity prevention-related services.
