What motivated you to join the Youth Advisory Board?

I joined the board because I wanted to be a part of something bigger than the programs I was already a part of. I wanted to connect with other young people that were as passionate about changing the game on obesity as I am.

What barriers do youth face when trying to live a healthy lifestyle?

Because we are bombarded with so many fast food commercials, it is a constant battle to eat in a healthy manner. We eat entirely too many fast food meals on a daily basis.

Why is it important that youth have a voice in the fight against childhood obesity?

We can reach our generation unlike the adults. We know exactly what other youths want to hear and how we want to hear it! We know how to get the point of living a healthy lifestyle across to our generation. We can be instrumental in effective communication to our generation in the fight to overcome childhood obesity and other complications associated with this disease.

What’s your greatest accomplishment so far in creating a healthier generation?

My healthy weekend backpack program has changed the lives of over 1,500 children attending inner-city schools in my community.

If you could make one healthy change in your school or community, what would it be?

If I could, I would increase the availability of fresh fruits and vegetables to the low income residents of my community.
