DeSoto Trail Elementary School

I have more energy and I’m more focused now that I’m healthy. In music class, we do a lot of dancing to gets kids moving. I couldn’t do that with them before, but now I can.”

When Leon County School District enrolled in the Healthy Schools Program, the administration asked each school to nominate a wellness champion. Principal Michele Keltner turned to Music Teacher Randy Baez who knows quite a lot about the importance of health from personal experience. Randy is a two-time cancer survivor who, after shedding more than 100 pounds, has become a Zumba instructor and an inspiration for many in her community. With Randy’s leadership, DeSoto Trail replaced food-based rewards for students with a menu of healthier alternatives such as glow-in the-dark disco parties. Everyone now starts the school day with 10 minutes of jogging or walking on the soccer field and receives a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated at school. Randy’s example and enthusiasm is spreading the culture of health beyond the school walls: Last year, several parent volunteers coordinated the school’s second annual 5K/1-mile race, which raised $6,000 and attracted more than 500 student participants and their family members.
