I’m Going but not Far
Goodbyes are always bittersweet and this one is no exception. Today officially ends my proud tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Leading the Alliance from its nascent stages has proved to be the most rewarding experience of my professional life. I am sad to leave my formal role in the Alliance family. My successor, Dr. Howell Wechsler is someone I greatly respect and admire. He has long been a thought leader in the children’s health and child obesity prevention arena, and I am confident that he will lead the Alliance to even greater heights. My new role, as the Chief Executive Officer of the Clinton Health Matters Initiative at the Clinton Foundation, will keep me closely connected to the Alliance and the very important issues that affect the well-being of our children
It is no surprise that I care deeply about turning the tide on childhood obesity. During my tenure at the Alliance, I was heartened to learn that people across the United States feel the same. In my countless conversations with teachers and administrators, business leaders, youth and youth providers, the same refrain was repeated, “The health of our kids will make or break the future of this country.” I had some of my most inspiring chats with youth, themselves. The youth never ceased to amaze me with their sense of responsibility for helping their peers eat better and move more, as well as their tremendous ideas about how to be a part of the solution.
If there was ever a moment when I needed inspiration, I needed to look no farther than the tremendous Alliance team. I am grateful and humbled by the collective commitment of this talented group of professionals to improving the lives of young people. Every Alliance team member works tirelessly every day on the mission of improving children’s health.
I look forward to watching the Alliance grow from my new vantage point. The vantage point of someone who’s witnessed great accomplishments and still feels that the organization’s future holds even bigger successes.
