Obesity Is a Disease?
We all know the unfortunate reality of obesity rates in our country. If current trends continue, 42 percent of American adults will be obese by 2030. Obesity often begins in childhood and has severe medical consequences for our nation’s youth. Today, the American Medical Association officially designated obesity as a disease. The definition of obesity as a “disease” highlights the importance of addressing this public health crisis.
Recently, we have seen obesity rates slow from the record rates of the past 30 years; however, there is still a long way to go in reversing this epidemic. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation applauds the American Medical Association for bringing much-needed attention to this issue. We believe that everyone has a part in solving childhood obesity—schools, companies, community organizations, healthcare professionals, and families—and we look forward to advancing the solutions together.
