Sugar Lowdown

Can the sugar you drink in sweetened beverages over the course of a year add up to equal 664 pieces of melting fudge, or maybe twice the height of a giraffe? The answer could be yes if you drink only one sugary beverage a day. Add a couple more drinks and those equivalents grow exponentially.

Sugar sweetened drinks are the largest source of added sugar in the diets of US youth. And it’s our job as parents, caregivers, and role models for the next generation to set the right example and relay the right message about sugar consumption to our kids.

It’s easy to overlook the amount of sugar we consume in a single day when we look at it as just flavor. Remove that sugar from the drink and give it a physical form, and it turns into something that we would not as quickly put into our bodies. Think 14,600 teaspoons of sugar or maybe 7,300 sugar cubes. Sugar is not just flavor, it’s added calories – empty calories that contain no nutritional benefit when consumed. These added calories are not giving us the nutrients we need to fill us up and fuel us for our day. We then have to eat more calories to make up for the energy we are not getting from our sugar-sweetened beverages.

But they taste great, and in moderation we think they can be enjoyed, but as with all that we intake each day, being cognizant of what we put into our bodies is key.
