4 Smart Snack Shout Outs

From California to Florida, thousands of schools across the country have already made healthy snack changes, putting them ahead of the July 1 deadline for Smart Snacks in School standards implementation.

This week of our Swap Your Snack Countdown is dedicated to giving well-deserved shout-outs to four stand-out schools and districts.

Perry County, Alabama

Removing the Stigma from Reimbursable Meals

Every school in Perry County, Alabama has received the Healthy School Program’s Silver Recognition Award. This means that they’ve made some comprehensive healthy changes, including not offering a la carte items in the cafeteria. Not only did this decision ensure all students were eating the reimbursable healthy meal, but it also eliminated the stigma that can come with not having the income to purchase a la carte meals, as the large majority of his students receive Title I support.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

How Activity Raised $20,000

Gone are the cake walks at Monte Vista Elementary School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This traditionally most popular fundraiser has been replaced with blending up some healthy smoothies, all while riding a bike! Roller skating, swimming parties, and a Jog-a-Thon are other physically active events that have brought in more than $20,000!

Plattsmouth, Alabama

Bottled Water, the New Drink of Choice

Plattsmouth High School in Plattsmouth, Alabama is now selling just as many bottles of water as they were of soda five years ago. Its new fruit cart rounds the hallways mid-morning, and the school culinary team offers low-fat muffins and popcorn at the Bake Shoppe.

Mount Rainier, Maryland

Doing Away with the Staff Sweet Tooth

Way back in 2009, Mount Rainier Elementary School adopted a “no candy at staff meetings” policy. Not only did the idea keep staff healthier, but it also provided a teachable moment to explain to the students why their teachers weren’t eating candy anymore.

Creative ideas like these are just the tip of the iceberg. See more stories of inspiration, and put your thinking caps on for snacks you can swap too! Got ideas you want to share to inspire others? Post a comment below!
