3 Kids Who Made the Swap

One thing we have learned in our eight years of working with schools is that oftentimes the students are the healthy change makers and leaders within their school communities. This week in our Swap Your Snack Countdown, we are talking about kids that have proven this belief to be true by leading the charge to swap their snacks.

The Advocate

Rogelio Barrera Bejarano

Although high school senior Rogelio Barrera Bejarano just moved to the United States from El Salvador six years ago, he’s already made quite an impact at California Virtual Academy in Van Nuys, California.

Rogelio is a health advocate during the school day and even has been swapping snacks after the school day ends. He brought healthy snacks to his school’s homecoming dance to set the trend that if you eat and drink healthier options you are more likely to get up and move. We can’t wait to see more changes his school makes during the school day when the Smart Snacks in School standards are in effect July 1!

The Inventor

Carter Kostler

After realizing soda and sugary drinks contributed to childhood obesity, 15-year old Carter Kostler not only encouraged his peers in Virginia Beach not to drink them, but he also took his learnings nationally. Earlier this spring, perhaps you saw him on TV’s popular Shark Tank pitching his fruit-infused water bottle invention. The water bottle gives you a taste of real fruit, without the added calories and sugar.

The Young Chef

Haile Thomas

Twelve-year-old Haile Thomas has spoken at national events across the country, was featured in Oprah magazine, competed in Rachael vs. Guy Kids-Cook-Off on the Food Network, and has been a guest of the First Lady for the 2013 State of the Union Address. Why all the publicity? She’s a dedicated health advocate for her peers and motivational speaker. Her mission is to engage, inspire, and motivate her peers to cook and eat healthier meals and snacks. Start cooking up some of her favorites in her cookbook.

You are never too young to lead change. Follow the lead of these healthy kids, who are just a handful of hundreds across the nation who are standing up for their belief in a healthy eating. If you have an idea to swap your school’s snack, bring that idea to your principal!
