My Visit to West Side High: Nigel Sylvester

This past week, I had the opportunity to talk and hop on a spinning bike with students at Edward A. Reynolds West Side High School in New York City. West Side High is focused on creating a healthier environment for kids, helping them eat better and move more. And it is one of only six schools across the country that received the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s National Healthy Schools Gold Award this year.

I relate to these kids. They’re from my city. I’ve probably seen them before around town when I’m on my bike. So I wanted to congratulate them and especially their faculty on this major achievement they brought to our city.

I also shared 3 of my favorite tips for staying healthy:

  • Exercise. I exercise every single day by riding my bike around the city. I might ride my bike 20 miles a day, and in between those 20 miles, I’m jumping and lifting my bike up to get a full body workout.
  • Eat Greens. When I was young, I used to hate salads and now I absolutely love them. Understanding that what you put into your body is what you get out of it is extremely important for young people to know.
  • Exercise Your Brain. Focusing on your mental health and your education allows you to better understand your body’s needs.

After we talked, I got on the spinning bikes with students and Principal Jean McTavish, who usually leads the session to show them just how hard I work out. I wanted them to see me sweating right alongside them.

My main message for West Side High—and for all young people—is that your body is your foundation.

Working on your foundation is important for anything you want to do, whatever you want to become, whether it’s a professional athlete, an artist, a scientist, or a principal.

I left the school with a serious sweat from that spinning class, some new Instagram followers, and a great deal of respect for all the efforts made to help kids strengthen their foundations. Glad I got to be a part of it.
