Boo - Halloween is fast approaching! The annual holiday’s tradition of collecting sweet treats presents a challenge for those who are trying to foster healthy eating habits for their children.
But have no fear. Being mindful of your child’s food choices doesn’t have to ruin the spirit of the season. Help your child fuel up on a healthy and festive dinner before trick-or-treating so he or she won’t be craving sugary snacks later in the evening.
Try a simple, healthy Halloween-themed menu complete with plenty of spookiness.
Blend skim or low-fat milk with any combination of fruits and vegetables – try frozen pineapple chunks, banana, and spinach – to make this delicious and nutritious drink. The spinach is what gives the smoothie its ghoulish color!
Baby carrots serve as the witch’s finger and almond slivers as the fingernails in this easy recipe for a scary snack or side dish. Make a notch on one end of the carrot and use a teaspoon of low-fat cream cheese or yogurt to fasten the almond.
Boil whole wheat pasta or roast and prepare spaghetti squash and serve it with tomato sauce (also known as blood in this spooky recipe). Top the concoction with eyeballs, made by placing basil circles on meatballs. Substitute mozzarella cheese pearls for the meatballs to make the dish vegetarian or use black eyed peas for a vegan dish.
