Added Sugars and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Children
A Scientific Statement from the American Heart Association

How much added sugar is too much? A rigorous scientific review conducted by the American Heart Association concludes that children ages 2 to 18 should eat or drink less than six teaspoons of added sugars daily.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, one of the nation’s largest children’s health organizations with a focus on combating childhood obesity, strongly endorses the new AHA guidelines on added sugars for children. The AHA guidelines will be integrated into the Alliance’s programs and messages and will play a critical role in guiding our work and the work of the entire public health community.
We look forward to continuing our work with schools, communities and businesses to empower kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits—and supporting efforts to limit the amount of added sugars in a child’s diet.
