Industry Collaborations

We rely on our diverse partnerships to create the multi-faceted solutions we need to reverse the rates of childhood obesity. Though we welcome everyone to the table, we don’t accept funds from entities with which we are negotiating solutions.

Engaging with companies in diverse industries can systemically improve access to healthier foods and beverages as well as physical activity for kids and their families. Through our efforts, leading food and beverage companies, group purchasing organizations, and technology companies have agreed to help America’s schools serve healthier foods and beverages through agreements we’ve brokered.

What Results Look Like

Our agreements bring together the right people and right companies to reduce the barriers like time, cost, and availability that stand between youth and eating healthier and moving more.  More than 30 million students nationwide will have access to healthier school meals because of these types of agreements.

Reduced Calories

Our landmark agreement with the American Beverage Association (ABA) has contributed to a 90 percent reduction in calories from beverages shipped to schools between the 2004-2010 school years. The vast majority of full-calorie soft drinks have been removed and the beverages available to students through school vending machines and cafeteria a la carte lines are now nutritious, age appropriately portioned, and no or low calorie.

Affordable Foods

Food manufacturers pledge to price healthier items at rates no higher than comparable “classic” items, market products that meet our nutritional guidelines and meet increased sales metrics for a healthier school portfolio. Participating manufacturers have also pledged to increase the sales of compliant products by to least 50 percent of their entire school sales within five years.

Purchasing Power

Group purchasing organizations use their buying power to make healthier products more affordable and shifting the purchasing behaviors of participating school districts to buy Alliance compliant products. We hope to see a 50 percent increase in procurement purchasing over a five year period.

Innovative Technology

In order to help schools take the first step in changing their purchasing process, we collaborated with the technology firm Interflex to create a free online tool that streamlines the procurement process and assists schools with planning, bidding and purchasing healthier products that meet our school nutrition guidelines.
