the story of this cookbook

In the heart of Northern New Mexico, nestled among the Eight Tewa Pueblos, lies a treasure trove of culinary heritage and familial warmth known as The Feasting Place. This enchanting locale, owned by Norma and Hutch Naranjo, became the inspiration for the From My Family to Yours cookbook. In October of 2022, members of the Healthy Food Community of Practice had the unique opportunity to enter Norma’s world while visiting The Feasting Place, where the spirit of community, tradition, and sustainability thrives.

The Feasting Place is more than just a business; it is a sanctuary where people across the globe gather to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Pueblo culture and traditional knowledge that has been passed down through generations. It was here, amid the warmth of Norma’s hospitality that the idea for the cookbook was born. The group learned about the diverse Pueblos of New Mexico and the traditional outdoor adobe ovens, or “Hornos,” which are central to Pueblo baking traditions, especially during feast days and other celebratory occasions.

However, the narrative of this cookbook expands far beyond the boundaries of The Feasting Place, weaving a rich tapestry that stretches to the bustling communities of Los Angeles. Here, the cookbook transforms into a mosaic of stories, traditions, and recipes that have been lovingly gathered from both the youth and older adults of Los Angeles. Each recipe is a thread in the intricate fabric of a community quilt, representing a myriad of cultural backgrounds and familial legacies. The cookbook serves as a testament to the power of food in bringing people together, fostering connections, and creating a sense of belonging.
