Getting Back-to-School Healthy: Easy as 1-2-3

The days are getting shorter and temperatures are starting to dip, which can only mean one thing: It’s back-to-school time! The start of a new school year is the ideal time to envision what you want to accomplish this year, set priorities and create your plan of action.

The Healthy Schools Program has the tools and resources you need to get your school year off to a healthy start. Sharpen your pencils - it’s as easy as 1-2-3.

1) Take stock of what you’ve accomplished

If you didn’t have time to update your assessment at the end of the school year, make sure that’s at the top of your to-do list this year. Celebrating last year’s successes and talking about what you’ve learned can inspire your wellness team to reach even higher in the year to come.

2) Convene your first wellness committee meeting

Accomplishing your school wellness goals is easier (and more fun!) when you build a team. Get your first wellness committee meeting on the calendar early in the school year to start outlining your goals and divvying up responsibilities.

3) Revisit your school wellness policy

As you may have heard, the USDA released a local wellness policy final rule over the summer, which affects how wellness policies are evaluated and updated. Learn more about the changes and join the conversation in our new online community for additional guidance.

Before you know it, you’ll be on your way to making lasting changes that will create a healthier learning environment for students and working environment for your staff.
