Robeson County Schools Remain Committed to Health and Well-Being During COVID-19

Learn how masks and supplies donated by Kohl’s will support their community efforts.

Healthier Generation is proud to partner with Kohl’s and local districts to supercharge COVID-19 health and safety in schools throughout the country. On Oct. 4, 2021, Public Schools of Robeson County welcomed us to host a mask donation event at Deep Branch Elementary in Lumberton, North Carolina. At the event, school staff sorted and distributed 100,000 face masks generously donated by Kohl’s. District leaders coordinated the community event with Shauvon Simmons-Wright, Senior National Advisor, Healthy Schools and Communities Program, of Healthier Generation.

This donation will make it easier for students and staff to access effective face coverings to help keep their community safe. “Currently, Robeson County ranks as one of the lowest in citizen vaccination rates in North Carolina and has one of the highest COVID-19 positivity rates,” said Glen Burnett, the district’s chief communications officer. “This generous donation underscores the importance of mask-wearing within our district. It is our hope that our students will practice important safety precautions and express to their family and friends the importance of wearing a mask and encourage getting vaccinated.”

In addition to promoting mask-wearing and vaccinations, schools in Robeson County have implemented several safety measures to protect more than 21,500 students and staff and ensure their opportunities to stay healthy and in school. These include sanitizing stations throughout schools and floor signage to designate and encourage physical distancing. Dr. Burnett adds, “Every classroom desk within the district has a plastic shield for student protection. Students eat lunch in their classrooms to eliminate large gatherings within the cafeteria. Our district has partnered with MAKO Medical to offer free weekly testing to district students who register for this service.”

We applaud the steps Robeson County Schools are taking to support student and staff well-being, and we are grateful to our partners at Kohl’s for their donations and dedication to healthy families in every community. Kohl’s has donated masks and supplies to several school districts, including Public Schools of Robeson County, Shelby County Schools in Tennessee, Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland, and Cleveland Metropolitan School District in Ohio.
