Healthier Generation and Kohl’s Working Towards Healthier Summers for Families

National organizations launch first of many family well-being campaigns at critical time for youth

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) July 1, 2019 – When the school bell rings and summer officially begins, many families want to ensure their kids are continuing the routines and learnings set forth during the school year. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Healthier Generation), one of the nation’s leading children’s health nonprofits, and Kohl’s today launched the #SummerSwap campaign as part of Kohl’s Healthy at Home, a national family health and wellness initiative that seeks to empower families to prioritize a healthy lifestyle in their home and wherever their children live, learn and play.

Beginning today, users can visit the Kohl’s Healthy at Home digital resource hub to access #SummerSwap, the first suite of content rooted in keeping kids healthy during the critical summer months through simple “swaps” designed to boost nutrition, get moving and be mentally well.

The Kohl’s Healthy at Home hub serves as a “one-stop-shop” for parents, guardians, educators, out-of-school time professionals and community members to access nutritious meal and snack ideas, games and activities to keep kids moving, and tips to improve social-emotional well-being. During a time when physical activity, food security, optimal social-emotional health and academic development is paramount, Kohl’s Healthy at Home and #SummerSwap will provide simple ways to ensure kids have their healthiest and happiest summers yet. Resources for #SummerSwap will be available through July 31, 2019. The Kohl’s Healthy at Home hub will continue to house new and updated resources for families and the greater community through the rest of the year.

“With the school year ending, parents and guardians are seeking ways to continue healthy eating and physical activity – and are looking to out-of-school time programs as community anchors in health,” said Kathy Higgins, chief executive officer at Healthier Generation. “We want to make sure that families and out-of-school time programs have the resources they need to continue supporting youth during this time of year. As a parent myself, I look forward to utilizing the resource hub alongside thousands of others that have the power to influence kids’ development of lifelong healthy habits.”

To help spread the word about #SummerSwap and inform families of the new resources, Healthier Generation has enlisted the help of notable out-of-school time organizations including Afterschool Alliance, Communities in Schools, National Recreation and Park Association, National Summer Learning Association, and many more.

Recently, Kohl’s donated $2 million to Healthier Generation to launch Kohl’s Healthy at Home including its first initiative, #SummerSwap. Together, Kohl’s and Healthier Generation aim to reach thousands of families across the nation and equip them with simple but meaningful ways to promote healthier lifestyles for kids through a series of creative marketing campaigns that will continue throughout 2020 and 2021. Kohl’s donation is made possible through the company’s philanthropic program, Kohl’s Cares, which sells children’s books and toys and donates 100 percent of the net profit to support happier and healthier communities nationwide.
