Sleep Number and Healthier Generation Tackle Youth Sleep Crisis with “Sleep Smarter. Perform Better.” Digital Resource Center

Equipping teachers and parents with tools to achieve better sleep

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) November 19, 2018 – Today, Sleep Number, the leader in sleep innovation, and Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Healthier Generation), a nationally-renowned non-profit leader in children’s health, launched Sleep Smarter. Perform Better., a digital resource center featuring information and tools to help youth achieve better sleep and improve their health, well-being and academic performance.

Sleep Number and Healthier Generation developed the resource center in response to the sleep deficit affecting kids today. A recent survey found that 70% of youth don’t get enough sleep – seven hours or less on school nights versus the recommended eight to nine hours. This shortage adds up to almost a full night of sleep lost each week and can lead to health issues including obesity, diabetes, and problems with attention and behavior. Developing quality sleep habits can help reduce these risks and improve our kids’ mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

“We must address the serious sleep deficiency among our youth,” said Melissa Barra, Chief Strategy and Customer Relationship Officer at Sleep Number. “The ‘Sleep Smarter. Perform Better.’ digital resource center will arm community change-makers, parents, and youth themselves with the tools they need to improve sleep, setting our kids up to reach their full potential.”

Sleep Number recently announced a commitment to improving the lives of one million youth by 2025 through better sleep.  Partnering with Sleep Number on this commitment is Healthier Generation – an organization that works with community leaders to ensure the environments that surround youth provide and promote good health. Through the digital resource center, Sleep Number and Healthier Generation will reach thousands of educators and parents across the country.

"This partnership is an exciting step in the children’s health movement and highlights both organizations’ dedication to enhancing the lives of youth across the United States,” said Brian Weaver, Chief Program Officer at Healthier Generation. “By partnering with Sleep Number and integrating sleep into our programming, we are able to have an even greater impact on overall health and academic performance of kids today.”
